Ultramarathon Spirulina: an inbred harmony?

ultramarathon with spirulina

Ultramarathon : Is Spirulina creating raves?

Athletes engaged in ultramarathon have achieved a mythical status among endurance runners. These top athletes do not garner much attention from the press. And people will only recognize ultramarathon runners as marathon runners with an “ultra-” appended.

Ultramarathon : extreme sport

So, in practical terms, what is an ultramarathon? There are all types of extreme sport events, generally designed to be extremely harsh. The limits of physical human capacity are pushed back at every race.

Take the Badwater endurance run in the US: 217 kilometers in the Valley of Death, with a total vertical drop of 5,800 metres and temperatures exceeding 50°C . Scott Jurek, like many others, failed to complete the challenge a few times. However, later he actually won it twice.

… for which nutritional strategies take an utmost importance

Extreme athletic endeavors require specific nutritional strategies. The human body is pushed to its physical limits and diet quality will have a major impact on performance.

Nutrition Strategies

Trying to engage in ultramarathon eating only pizzas or steaks may have seemed like a good strategy few years back. Of course, the ugly consequences of such an unbalanced diet takes its toll. When undergoing such physical exertion, nutrition is of critical importance. A winning runner isn’t only a runner that claims victory during one single race but an athlete that minimizes inflammation, the risk of injury and improves post-effort recovery, thus minimizing the demands on his strained body.

The current trend is to favour foods with low inflammatory or even anti-inflammatory properties – many major endurance runners are even full-blown vegans. In any case, Spirulina is also a trendy sports supplement.

Growing rage of Spirulina in Athletes

This choice is that of Scott Jurek or Brendan Brazier, two uncontested legends of ultramarathon running. They take Spirulina and boast its merits, which is a rather good sign of Spirulina efficiency.

French ultramarathon runner Seb Chaigneau is also a consumer of Spirulina. He conquered the top rank at the Olympus Marathon as well as the Lybian Challenge, twice – running 196 kilometres in the desert in complete self-sufficiency, in non-stop of course!

My favourite example however, one that gives us the impression that we could each one day emerge as an exceptional athlete, is Rich Roll. This American athlete went from couch potato to runner of the Epic 5 in only six months. Epic 5? The idea is do toil through an Ultraman run –swimming 10 km in the open sea, biking 421 km cross-country and running 84 km on foot– five times in a single week!

I am of course not saying there is a cause-to-effect relationship but there probably was a bit of Spirulina  in such a feat!

Ultramarathon Spirulina Nutrition

study performed on nine runners – asked to run at 75% VO2 max for two hours followed by 95% VO2 max to exhaustion. The runners were tested with a placebo and after using spirulina. Results show an average 30 percent longer run when supplmented with Spirulina. An increase in fat oxidation and decrease in carbohydrate oxidation was also noted. These findings suggest that spirulina supports the body’s ability to preserve glycogen stores and utilize fat for energy more efficiently. Spirulina also reduced oxidative damage and promoted antioxidant activity after exercise.

Apart from potential performance gain, spirulina is a great source of nutrition. The health benefits gained from its nutritional composition are many to include it in regular diet.

H1N1 Pandemic

The Health Ministry and WHO declared H1N1 influenza as pandemic also known as Swine flu.  In India, reports state more than 25000 cases affected by H1N1 virus. Recently, Marathon runner OP Jaisha on 26th Aug tested positive for H1N1 virus aka swine flu after returning from Rio last week. She is the second Indian athlete to test positive for the virus after Sudha Singh was confirmed to be carrying the type A influenza. The changing weather, unusual rains adds to incubation and spread of deadly virus. Do you know Spirulina can help in this cause?

 Does Spirulina help against H1N1?

The questions lurks what is the way to protect family and self from H1N1 virus? To find answer one must look into why Influenza A ( H1N1 ) attacks all age groups? It’s an easy reason to guess –

  • Younger adults don’t maintain a balanced diet due to hectic lifestyle which reduces their immunity.
  • Immune system of children and elders are not at par to counter viral infection

What if we told you there is a simple solution to safeguard ourselves: Prodiet Spirulina

According to a report in Journal of Medicinal food, acidic condition of body makes it prone to virus attacks.  But yet, such a viral attack can be averted by use of Spirulina. Spirulina changes the pH of body into healthy alkaline state along with strengthening immune system. Moreover, Spirulina is a powerhouse of nutrients which makes it a potent food to fight infections and viruses. Some specific studies reveal that Spirulina is also helpful in controlling H1N1 infection.

Our daily food consists mainly of 100% acid-forming food like seafood, rice, noodles etc which is very unhealthy. High acidity in body reduces the activity of immune cells besides making an environment which harbours virus growth. Therefore, we should aim for food which renders alkalinity in body to have sustained good health.

 Why Spirulina helps against H1N1?

  • SPIRULINA is an alkaline food with potent array of beneficial nutrients.
  • It has all the essential amino acids and 10 of the 12 non-essential amino acids.
  • It is easily digestible, assimilated and bio-available.
  • Many studies prove Spirulina’s efficacy on health, including boosting body’s immune system against various illnesses, infections & chronic diseases.
  • Spirulina is an abundant source of phycocyanin (7-8%), a potent health-building pigment.
  • Phycocyanin helps produce stem cells, giving Spirulina a rejuvenating and energizing effect.
  • Phycocyanin inhibits infection and reproduction of H1N1 virus.
  • Lipoproteins in Spirulina sensitize body towards any viral/bacterial attack alongwith reinforcing the immune system.
  • Spirulina contains several bio-available forms of the mineral Sulphur which is famous for improving the immune system, rapid healing, and the functionality of liver and pancreas.

We can now change old adage, Spirulina every day, keeps doctor away!

Super-foods have been around for decades now. They have become incredibly popular among athletes.  Athletes need to ingest food dense in nutrients to perform at their potential. And what’s better than Spirulina for their nutrient need.

Super-foods provide “clean” energy, increase stamina and extend endurance. They also contain large doses of anti-oxidants, vitamins & minerals. Moreover, they are source of natural goodies in natural and bio-available form.

Spirulina was declared as “food of the Future” by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. Currently Spirulina is used by NASA in their space programs. According to a research conducted by NASA in 2012,one gram of algae has the nutritional equivalent of 1,000 grams of fruits and vegetables.

Spirulina for athletes in the Olympics!

According to Citybizlist (a US news and business website), Olympic athletes have for over four decades tapped into spirulina nutrition for energy gain, endurance and vitality. Nothing else matches spirulina incredible nutritional density.

One of the first athletes to link success to the super algae is Lee Evans –the four-time American gold medalist and four-time world records holder in track and field. Evans said spirulina nutrition improved my endurance & recovery. This gave me speed which resulted in my faster times.

Another country using the power of spirulina nutrition is China. China even has a spirulina farms only for its Olympic athletes. And, for the last 10 years, the Chinese Government has said its Olympic athletes take Spirulina. Several  elite groups such as Carnegie Institute, World Bank, have endorsed and recommend Spirulina as the most nutritionally dense food in the world. What’s & Not’s of Spirulina

Spirulina art

Since day 1, we have been educating about benefits of Prodiet Spirulina. The team also shared a few recipes with Spirulina being the main ingredient. We can keep ranting on about the benefits of this superfood. But, you also need to be aware of How to choose the brand, what precautions to take and what issues to be aware of.

How to take Spirulina

You understand how beneficial “Prodiet” Spirulina is to health and in terms of nutrients provided. Though, it may be expensive, and fit outside of the mould of traditional food, the reality is that it’s difficult to ignore how Spirulina can be a life-balancer. Not touted as a complete replacement for your food, but you should integrate “Prodiet” Spirulina into your diet as a prime supplement.

Understanding the dosage and the way to ingest, would help you get most out of it. Don’t guess, folks at New Age Nutrition are here to help.  The best way to start taking Spirulina is to mix it with food items. Spirulina is amazing superfood, but you may not necessarily love the taste of raw powder and its pungent smell.

Therefore, mix it in smoothies, add it to soups or dips to get start building the liking for taste. Thereafter, you could start making variations of energy globes, or protein bars or Spirulina patties.

Some sources promote high doses of Spirulina for any positive effect, but that’s not true. You will easily benefit from 1-2 teaspoons per day.

How to Choose best

You should really do your homework to be an educated customer. It makes sense because there are plenty of companies wanting to get onto Spirulina bandwagon. There are many products on offer as  blends, which we feel may fall short of giving out the complete benefit

The first tip is to find the right brand of Spirulna is to go with pure product and not a blend. If a product says it “features” Spirulina, then don’t buy it unless you are trying to develop a taste. You want plain pure Spirulina. We at New Age Nutrition offer natural Spirulina powder.

The second tip is avoid Spirulina from Japan or nearby areas as the potential pollutant levels could be high. Find a brand, which has its farms based in tropical belts (more sun and clear water) with their processes followed are not industrial but more natural.

Ask informed questions to brands/firms. If the brand is reputable, they will list everything or provide information privately to help you choose.

Precautions

Though, you may enjoy adding it to your diet and avail the health benefits, don’t overdo it.  Taking proper dosage that is 1-2 teaspoons per day is recommended.  Going over that may upset stomach or some adverse effects. Also you have to be careful about where your Spirulina comes from because it absorbs materials where it is grown. Make sure that it’s a natural product if not organic and never a blend.

Take time when you begin taking Spirulina because you should wait to see how your body will react.

Gradually increase your intake in small quantities to the recommended dosage.  A few of our customers have mentioned that they experienced prolonged hiccups for a day. A very few experienced a feverish feel.  If you have sea-food allergy, please avoid these algae. If you have other health problems, do consult with doctors before taking Spirulina. Pregnant women should only take Spirulina with advice of their doctors.

Conclusion!

Its only natural to feel skeptical that just one food supplement can offer so many benefits, but facts speak for themselves. There’s a reason, that Spirulina has grown in popularity and risen to Superfood Status. Even, if you turn to Spirulina only for Protein needs, it will impart various other health benefits in ways you may not have imagined. So start embracing Spirulina in your everyday like and see how you grow better and save yourself the trouble of visiting doctors often.
